How Much Protein Do You Actually Need?

For most people training seriously, 0.7 to 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight per day covers your bases for building and keeping muscle. There's no meaningful benefit to going much higher.

You don't need to weigh every meal. Anchor each meal around a palm-to-two-palms-sized protein source — chicken, fish, tofu, eggs, Greek yoghurt — and you'll land close to target without a spreadsheet.

Spread it across the day. Three to four protein-rich meals beats one giant hit. And if you're plant-based, combine sources across the day and consider a quality supplement to top up.

The best protein target is the one you can hit consistently for months. Perfect adherence to an impossible plan loses to good adherence to a simple one, every time.
